Principal Investigator

    Matteo Passoni

    Matteo Passoni was born in Lodi (Italy) in 1975. In 2000 he obtained a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. In 2004 he obtained a PhD in Radiation Science and Technology with the thesis “Theoretical studies on the non-linear and relativistic interaction between ultra-intense ultra-short laser pulses and plasmas, with applications”. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, where he conducts his teaching and research activity. He is lecturer for the MSc courses “Plasma physics”, “Physics of the Nucleus” and for the PhD courses “Electromagnetic Radiation” and “Simmetry Applications in Classical and Quantum Physics”. His current scientific interests and experience include: ultra-intense laser-driven ion acceleration; relativistic electromagnetic solitary waves in plasmas; instabilities in laser-produced plasma; plasma-wall interaction in tokamaks; scanning tunnelling spectroscopy; group theory applied to solids; nanostructured thin films. He has been/is Principal Investigator of nationally (MIUR – Futuro in Ricerca program) and internationally (Euratom FP7 and H2020; ERC) funded projects and he is coauthor of about 90 scientific publications on international peer reviewed journals, volumes and conference proceedings. 

    He is the Principal Investigator of the ENSURE project.

        Alessandro Maffini

        Alessandro Maffini was born in 1987 in Fiorenzuola d’Arda (PC), Italy. He got his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2012. In 2015 he obtained a PhD in Nuclear Science and Technology at the same university, defending a thesis about the laser cleaning of diagnostic first mirrors in nuclear fusion machines under the supervision of prof. M.Passoni. From February 2016 to November 2020 he worked as a post-doc researcher within the ENSURE project at Politecnico di Milano. Since December 2020 is a tenure Researcher (RTDa) at the Energy Department of Politecnico di Milano. His main research interests are related to the development of advanced materials with laser- and plasma-based techniques and the experimental and theoretical investigation of laser-matter interaction in different regimes, with a focus on the application of laser-driven radiation sources for material & nuclear sciences. 

        Main role within ENSURE project: development of nanostructured materials and targets, design and participation in laser-driven acceleration experiments, design of the new experimental facilities.

            Andrea Pola

            Andrea Pola was born in Romano di Lombardia (Italy) in 1976. In 2002 he graduated with honours in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. In 2006 he obtained a PhD with honours in Radiation Science and Technology with the thesis “Semiconductor Detectors for Neutron Spectrometry and Microdosimetry”. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, lecturer of the courses “Radioactivity and Radiation Protection” and “Laboratory of Physics of the Nucleus”. His scientific activity is currently devoted to the study and the development of innovative detectors and systems for spectrometry and dosimetry of mixed radiation fields, in particular for active neutron spectrometry and hadrontherapy.  He was involved in several experiments and projects at regional, national and international level. Andrea Pola is author or co-author of more than 80 publications on international scientific journals and proceedings of international conferences.

            Main role within ENSURE project: active beam diagnostics and characterization; ion and neutron spectrometry.

                David Dellasega

                David Dellasega was born in Rovereto, Italy in 1979. He is Post Doc researcher at the Energy Department of Politecnico di Milano since May 2013. He graduated cum laude in Nuclear Engineering in 2004 and got his PhD in Radiation Science and Technology in 2008, both at Politecnico di Milano. Since 2008 he works at the Micro and Nanostructured Materials Lab (NanoLab) @ Politecnico di Milano. He is coauthor of more than 60 international scientific publications. He presented numerous oral contributions and posters at national and international conferences in the field of Condensed Matter Physics. His present activity is focused on the production of nanostructured materials for nuclear fusion studies by Pulsed Laser Deposition and their characterization by SEM. In particular his work is focused on the production of nanostructured metals and ultra-low density carbon materials.

                    Margherita Zavelani-Rossi

                    Margherita Zavelani-Rossi was born in 1969, in Milano (Italy). She is Associate Professor at the Energy Department of the Politecnico di Milano since January 2016. She received her Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering and her PhD in Physics at Politecnico di Milano (Italy), she spent one year at the Laboratoire d’Optique Appliquée (ENSTA-CNRS-Ecole Polytechnique, France) and then she worked at the Physics Department of Politecnico di Milano, as an Assistant Professor. She is lecturer of physics courses, co-author of more than 70 international articles, 2 book chapters and of an international patent. Her research activity mainly focuses on the generation of short laser pulses (fs-regime) and on the ultrafast spectroscopy of organic materials and of semiconductor and metallic nanoparticles.

                    Main role within ENSURE project: development of a system for pulsed laser deposition with fs pulses (fs-PLD) for the fabrication of nanostructured materials, with particular emphasis on optical issues.

                        Valeria Russo

                        Valeria Russo was born in Monza, Italy in 1970. She is Assistant Professor at the Energy Department of Politecnico di Milano since October 2016. She graduated cum laude in Nuclear Engineering in 1995 and got her PhD in Science and Technology for Nuclear Plants in 1998, both at Politecnico di Milano. From 1999 to 2002 she worked at STMicroelectronics, Italy, as a process engineer, dealing with the development of dry-etching processes for semiconductor production. Since 2002 she works at the Micro and Nanostructured Materials Lab (NanoLab) @ Politecnico di Milano. She is coauthor of more than 60 international scientific publications. She presented numerous oral contributions and posters at national and international conferences in the field of Condensed Matter Physics. Her present activity is focused on the characterization of nanostructured materials and surfaces by Raman scattering, SERS and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Specifically she works on functional metal oxides such as Al:ZnO, WO3, TiO2, Ta:TiO2, on thermoelectric semiconductors (Bi2Te3) and on nanostructured carbon-based systems such as graphene, cluster assembled carbon films, nanotubes, sp-hybridized carbon chains.

                            Arianna Formenti

                            Arianna Formenti was born in 1991 in Vimercate, Italy. She received her Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on numerical investigations of intense laser interaction with nanostructured plasmas. She carried out her PhD studies in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano in the framework of the ENSURE project. She successfully defended her PhD thesis on “Advances in laser-driven ion acceleration theory” on July 6th, 2020. She is mainly interested in Particle-In-Cell simulations of laser-plasma interaction and modeling of laser-based ion acceleration.

                            Main role within ENSURE project: numerical support for the experimental activities of the group, investigation of laser-plasma interaction, modeling of low-density nanostructured plasmas.

                                Francesco Mirani

                                Francesco Mirani was born in 1992 in Brescia, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on the investigation of possible applications of laser-driven ion acceleration in the field of Ion Beam Analysis (IBA). He carried out his PhD studies in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano within the framework of the ERC-ENSURE project. He successfully defended his PhD thesis on “Numerical and experimental investigation of laser-driven radiation sources for materials characterization” on July 14th, 2021. He is mainly interested in the Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE), Photon Activation Analysis (PAA) materials characterization methods, Direct Current and High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering deposition techniques and Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations.

                                Main role within ENSURE project: study the feasibility of laser-driven Ion Beam Analysis experiments.

                                    Davide Vavassori

                                    Davide Vavassori was born in 1994 in Bergamo, Italy. He is a PhD student in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano since 2019. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on production and characterization of optimized targets for enhanced laser driven ion acceleration.

                                        Francesco Gatti

                                        Francesco Gatti was born in 1996 in Milano, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2021, with a thesis on the development of non-conventional targets for laser-driven particle sources. He is currently a PhD student in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano with a scholarship on the research topic “Development of an innovative laser-driven particle source for industrial and societal applications”.

                                            Marta Galbiati

                                            Marta Galbiati was born in 1996 in Cantù (CO), Italy. She got her Master’s degree in Physics Engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on the numerical investigation of high-energy photon emission in laser-plasma interaction with double-layer targets. She has been a PhD student in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano since February 2021 with the theme of numerical investigations of laser-driven photon sources with nanostructured materials and their applications.

                                                Davide Orecchia

                                                Davide orecchia was born in 1995 in Verbania, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2020, with a thesis on the production of carbon nanofoams through femtosecond pulsed laser deposition. He is currently a PhD student in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano, working on pulsed laser deposition of low density materials.

                                                    Luca Fedeli

                                                    Luca Fedeli was born in 1988 in Gallarate, Italy. He is a post-doc researcher at Politecnico di Milano since 2016. He received his Master’s degree in Physics from University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy) with a thesis on laser-induced shock wave propagation in cone targets (joint supervision of prof. D.Batani and prof. J.J.Santos, Univ.Bordeaux 1, France). He obtained his PhD at University of Pisa (Italy) under the supervision of Dr A.Macchi (CNR-INO,Italy) and defending a thesis on “High Field Plasmonics”. He is mainly interested in Particle-In-Cell numerical simulations of laser-plasma interaction, but he enjoys also taking part in experimental activities.

                                                    Main role within ENSURE project: numerical support for the experimental activities of the group, investigation of laser-plasma interaction with low-density nanostructured plasmas.

                                                        Andrea Pazzaglia

                                                        Andrea Pazzaglia was born in 1991 in Milano, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on production and characterization of nanostructured films for laser driven ion acceleration in 2016. He carried out his PhD in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano in the framework of the project ENSURE and successfully defended his PhD thesis on “Investigation on near-critical double-layer targets for enhanced laser-driven ion acceleration” on July 6th, 2020. He is mainly interested in production, modeling and characterization of materials for ion acceleration purposes.

                                                        Main role within ENSURE project: support target development, production and characterization; modeling of low-density nanostructured plasmas.

                                                            Lorenzo Cialfi

                                                            Lorenzo Cialfi was born in 1989 in Milan, Italy. He received his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2013 with a thesis about theoretical modeling of laser induced ion acceleration. He received a PhD in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano. Currently he is a post-doctoral researcher at the energy department of Politecnico di Milano. He is mostly involved in Particle-In-Cell simulations of laser-plasma interaction and laser induced ion acceleration modelling.

                                                            Main role in the ENSURE: theoretical and numerical support of the experimental activity of the group. He is mainly focused on the study on laser plasma coupling.

                                                              Support Team

                                                              For the development of specific aspects of the project (e.g. design of new instrumentation; investigation of adhesion properties of nanostructured coatings and layers; properties of Carbon nanostructures), the ENSURE team exploits selected expertise of Professors and Researchers of the Micro and Nanostructured materials lab @ Politecnico di Milano, under the coordination of the PI, Matteo Passoni.
